Individual MU4R Registration
The NMLS Federal Registry is the system of record federally chartered or insured institutions and their mortgage loan originators (MLOs) must use to meet the registration requirement.
Criminal Background Check
Prior to registration, mortgage loan originators (MLOs) must submit fingerprints to NMLS (unless they already have fingerprints on file with NMLS) and authorize NMLS to process a criminal background check (CBC) with the FBI. The results of the CBC are returned to the employing institution through NMLS.
Viewing the Status of Your Criminal Background Check
Follow these steps to check the status of an existing criminal background check (CBC) request.

Individual MU4R Registration
The NMLS Federal Registry is the system of record federally chartered or insured institutions and their mortgage loan originators (MLOs) must use to meet the registration requirement.
- MU4R Requirements
  The MU4R must be submitted through the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS) by either the employing institution or the individual MLO. In either case, the MLO must attest to his or her information before the MU4R can be filed.

  If you are a mortgage loan originator (MLO) and your institution has initiated a MU4R Form on your behalf, but you will be paying the registration fee, you will need to log into your NMLS account, review the filing, submit your MU4R Form, and remit payment.

- Viewing Your Registration Status
  You can use the Federal MLO Registration List in NMLS to view the status of your MU4R. Each time the registration status is updated in NMLS, you will receive a system generated e-mail detailing the status change.

  An MU4R may require amendment for any of the following reasons: revisions required by your employer; changed information on your record; events occur requiring updates to disclosures.

Follow these steps to check the status of an existing criminal background check (CBC) request.

Procedure

Navigate to the NMLS Login page (Federal Context).
Log in to your NMLS account.
Select the Federal context, if the Context screen is displayed.

Note: Be sure you are in the Federal context by selecting Federal from the You are currently drop down list. Your screen should display the Federal Registry watermark.
Select Composite View > View Individual.
Select View Criminal Background Check Requests on the left navigation panel.
From this page you can view the status of an existing request or click a link to schedule your fingerprint appointment if necessary. See the Fingerprint Status Reference Chart for explanations of status.
