System Tasks - Detailed Overview

A detailed overview of the different system tasks that can be generated for individuals in NMLS.

Below is a list of the NMLS system tasks added as a part of the NMLS August 2026 release:

Pay Outstanding Fee

What is it?

A system task that alerts a user when an Agency Fee associated with a license or license application is outstanding and must be paid.

Benefits:

Gives users clearer visibility into required payments, reduces the risk of delayed processing because of unpaid fees, and provides a due date so users can prioritize the action.

Replacing existing functionality or new feature:

Replaces existing System license item: Outstanding Agency Invoice

Alerts:

Grant Access to State Employer Sponsorship

What is it?

A system task that asks the individual user to grant the necessary access so an employer can begin the sponsorship process for a license. This task is only generated when the individual has no prior or existing relationships after they submit an MU4 Form.

Benefits:

Clarifies that the individual must take an access-related step before the employer can act, helps prevent sponsorship delays, and makes the handoff between individual and employer more visible.

Get Employer Sponsorship

What is it?

A system task that tells the user an employer sponsorship action is needed for the license. This task is generated after a license application is submitted and the license is not sponsored, and/or when the last sponsorship is removed from an active license.

Benefits:

Makes sponsorship requirements easier to identify, helps individuals and employers coordinate next steps, and reduces uncertainty about why a license may not be active.

Credit Report Required - Frozen Credit File

What is it?

A system task that appears when a required credit report cannot be obtained because the user’s credit file is frozen. The user must take action with the credit reporting agency so the credit report can be accessed.

Benefits:

Gives users a clearer explanation of why the credit report requirement is blocked, helps them resolve the issue faster, and reduces support questions caused by unclear credit report status messages.

Replacing existing functionality or new feature:

  • Replaces existing System license item: Credit Report Required – Frozen Credit File for credit reports requested on a renewal filing.
  • New feature for credit reports requested on an MU4 filing.

Get Fingerprinted

What is it?

A system task that directs the user to complete fingerprinting when fingerprints are required for a background check.

Benefits:

Gives users a clear next action, consolidates multiple background check requirements into one task, and may help users avoid missed deadlines or expired background check windows.

New feature.

Federal CBC for License Application

What is it?

A system task that is connected to a specific license application that indicates if the individual has not received criminal background check results in NMLS.

Benefits:

Provide a license-level flag for users to see if a CBC is still outstanding. Does not generate for the licenses that do not require a Federal CBC. Maintains visibility of the CBC requirement if the Get Fingerprinted task expires after 180 days. Accounts for potential delays between fingerprint capture and CBC processing.

Alerts: As the actionable task information is captured in the Get Fingerprinted task, there are no alerts provided to the user associated with this System Task.
