License Surrenders and Withdrawals

Understand the process of surrendering an individual state license in NMLS.

Surrendering your license means that an existing, approved license you already hold is voluntarily given up. After surrender, you no longer hold the license and cannot engage in activities that require it, subject to the state’s approval of the surrender.

Withdrawing means you are pulling back an application that has not yet been approved. Essentially, you are saying you no longer want the license (or registration) to be granted.

Before a surrender request is submitted through NMLS, it is important that you consult the resources in the section of this guide. There may be state-specific requirements you must complete in order to surrender a license.
