Requesting a Credit Check in NMLS

How to request a credit report as part of the Individual MU4 form in NMLS.

About this task

These instructions explain the process of submitting a credit report request in NMLS. Upon requesting a credit report for the first time, individuals are required to complete an identity verification (IDV) process in which a series of questions will be asked regarding to the individuals credit history.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the NMLS Login page (State Context).
  2. Log in to your NMLS account.
  3. Click the Add New License button in the My Licenses section or the MU4 Filing link under My Tasks if you already have a filing in progress.
    An MU4 Form is opened.
  4. Click the Credit Check link in the left navigation panel.
  5. Select I want to request a credit report.
    Note: If you have a security freeze on your TransUnion® credit profile and this is not lifted at the time of the credit report request, the MU4 Filing and payment made will be voided and you will need to resubmit the filing once the security freeze has been lifted. Access TransUnion’s Security Freeze Page for information on how to lift security freeze. Two options are provided, a global lift or a specific third-party lift, you must select global lift.
  6. Select I agree to the TransUnion Smartmove Service Agreement.
  7. Click the Proceed to IDV button.
    Note: The IDV process is only required for the initial submission of a credit report. Once the IDV process is completed, it is not required to be completed for each credit report submission.
  8. Select the Next button.
  9. Answer the questions on the Identity Verification screen.
    Note: The questions will be generated from your TransUnion credit report and/or past demographic information (e.g., your most recent auto loan, mortgage, previous address.)
  10. Select the Next button.
  11. Click the Close button.
