Completing the Criminal Background Check Process

Learn about the Criminal Background Check (CBC) process required as part of the completing the Individual MU4 Form in NMLS.

The Criminal Background Check (CBC) is a required component of the individual licensing process in NMLS. It ensures that individuals applying for licensure complete a fingerprint-based background check through an NMLS-approved vendor.

Applicants must authorize a CBC in NMLS and schedule fingerprinting through the approved vendor, Fieldprint. CBC authorization is valid for 180 days. Fingerprints must be submitted within this period to avoid delays in the license application process.

If fingerprints were submitted for another NMLS-related process within the past three years and there has been no break in licensure or registration, the system may reuse those prints. Otherwise, new fingerprints are required.

Once fingerprints are collected, results are submitted directly to NMLS, and applicants can monitor the status of their CBC in the system. Successful completion of the CBC is required before a license can be approved.
