Licenses Bypassing Renewal

Some licenses may be excluded from the annual renewal process in NMLS depending on how recently they were issued or transitioned into the system.

Each year, a small number of licenses are excluded from participating in the annual NMLS renewal process. These licenses are marked by state agencies as “Bypassing Renewal” and are not eligible for submission during the regular renewal window.

This typically includes licenses that were recently transitioned into NMLS or issued late in the year. Agencies may also choose to exclude specific license types from renewal based on internal policies or structural changes.

Bypassing status is determined by each agency individually and may change from year to year. Licensees should consult the renewal requirements for each state in which they are licensed to determine whether any of their licenses are excluded from renewal.

If a license is marked as bypassing renewal, no action is required in NMLS during the renewal window for that license. It will remain in its current status unless otherwise instructed by the agency.
