NMLS Annual Renewal Overview for Companies
Understand the process and requirements for renewing company licenses or registrations in NMLS, including timelines, renewal eligibility, attestation, and submission of required fees and documentation.
The annual renewal period in NMLS begins on November 1 and ends on December 31 each year. During this time, companies must confirm their records are current, attest to the accuracy of their filings, and submit renewal requests with required fees. If a renewal request is not submitted by December 31, companies may have the opportunity to complete the process during the reinstatement period from January1 through the end of February. Not all state agencies allow reinstatement; review the Annual Renewal Checklist for agency-specific rules and deadlines.
To ensure a smooth renewal, companies should prepare before November 1 by reviewing their Company (MU1) and Branch (MU3) records, confirming all licenses are in a renewable status, addressing outstanding license items, and ensuring sponsored mortgage loan originators (MLOs) have met continuing education requirements. See the Annual Renewal Checklist and the Renewal Deadlines, Requirements, and Fees Chart for details.
Within NMLS, companies can use the Renewals tab to manage all company, branch, and sponsored individual licenses. Larger companies may rely on the Renewal Dashboard, while smaller companies may find the Renewal Selection List more efficient. Companies can also generate real-time Renewal Activity reports to monitor renewal eligibility, attestation status, and potential deficiencies.
Renewal fees must be paid through NMLS. Payments may be made by ACH (no service fee) or by credit card (Visa or MasterCard only, with a 2.5% service fee). Some state regulators may collect additional fees outside NMLS—consult the renewal checklists for details. For a general overview of fees, see NMLS Processing Fees.
If a company fails to complete renewal or reinstatement, regulators may terminate the license. This can also result in termination of related branch licenses and sponsorships, requiring costly re-application. For authoritative definitions and requirements, see the NMLS Policy Guide.
