Registering Your MLOs with NMLS
Institutions must register their Mortgage Loan Originators (MLOs) in NMLS by creating or uploading records, completing MU4R filings, confirming employment, and paying required fees. This section describes the institution’s responsibilities in that process.
To comply with federal registration requirements under the SAFE Act, institutions must register their Mortgage Loan Originators (MLOs) in NMLS. Registration may be initiated by the institution through batch upload or directly by completing an MU4R on the MLO’s behalf. Once the filing is created, the MLO must attest to the information before it can be submitted and paid.
After submission, the institution is responsible for confirming or rejecting employment records, updating start dates if necessary, and requesting corrections when errors are found. Institutions must also pay fees associated with MU4R filings, manage criminal background check (CBC) results, and handle transfers of MLO employment in cases of mergers and acquisitions.
