License Status vs. Renewal Status
Understand the difference between a Mortgage Loan Originator’s (MLO’s) license status and renewal status in NMLS, and how each impacts eligibility, compliance, and renewal processing.
In NMLS, license status and renewal status are related but distinct concepts:
- License Status reflects the regulator’s classification of a license at a given point in time (for example, Approved, Suspended, or Terminated). This determines whether a license is eligible for renewal, as described in Renewable License Statuses.
- Renewal Status tracks the progress of a license during the renewal process itself (for example, Submitted, Approved, or Failed to Renew). This status appears in Renewal Activity reports and dashboards, helping companies and individuals monitor renewal progress once a request has been submitted.
Together, these two statuses guide both eligibility and completion of the renewal process: license status sets the baseline for whether a license can be renewed, while renewal status reflects the real-time outcome of the renewal workflow in NMLS.
