Completing Residential and Employment History

Learn how to enter complete and accurate residential and employment history in the Individual (MU4) Form.

About this task

All applicants for an MLO license must enter a full 10-year history of both residence and employment. This requirement ensures that licensing agencies can evaluate background information and verify eligibility according to federal and state standards. As outlined in the NMLS Policy Guidebook, no gaps are allowed between reported dates, and all history must use MM/YYYY format.

If there are periods of unemployment, school enrollment, or other non-working time, these must be entered with accurate dates and a clear explanation in the Employer Name field (e.g., "Unemployed").

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the NMLS Login page (State Context).
  2. Log in to your NMLS account.
  3. Navigate to your MU4 Filing.
    • If you already have a license and need to make an update, select Update Record from the Actions section.
    • If you already have a filing in progress, select the MU4 Filing link under My Tasks.
    • If you are completing a new license application, select the Add New License button.
    An MU4 Form is opened.
  4. Select the Individual Information link in the left navigation panel.
  5. Scroll to the Residential History section.
  6. Click Add Residential History to enter a residential period. Click Save when complete.
Note: Ensure that the full 10-year history is covered without gaps. Enter addresses using MM/YYYY format and include both start and end dates. The most recent residence should be listed first.
  7. Select the Employment link in the left navigation panel.
  8. Click Add Employment History to enter an employment period. Click Save when complete.
Note: Ensure that the full 10-year history is covered without gaps. Enter addresses using MM/YYYY format and include both start and end dates. The most recent employment should be listed first.
Note: If you were unemployed, in school, or self-employed, enter that information as your employer name (e.g., “Self-Employed,” “Student,” or “Unemployed”). Do not leave any time periods blank.
  9. Review both sections to ensure there are no gaps or overlapping entries before continuing your MU4 filing.
