Applying for a license or registration through NMLS requires several steps before you can begin the actual application process. These steps ensure that you meet all eligibility and documentation requirements and are properly prepared to proceed.

  • NMLS Account Setup: If you do not already have an NMLS account, you will need to create one to begin the application process.
  • Working With Your Employer: If you are currently employed, your company may assist in submitting or paying for your license request. Coordinate with them before proceeding.
  • Gathering Application Requirements: Use tools available on the NMLS Resource Center to review and collect state-specific and federal application materials.
  • Completing Pre-Licensure Education (PE): PE is required under the SAFE Act and must be completed before you can apply in most states.
  • Passing the SAFE MLO Test: You must pass the required exam before submitting your license application in most states.
