Information You Need Before You Can Apply
Gather essential personal, historical, and state-specific documentation before beginning your MU4 license application filing.
About this task
Before starting your MU4 filing in NMLS, it is important to collect the information and documents you’ll need to complete the application without delays. This includes both general background and any state-specific requirements outlined in the NMLS Policy Guide.
You should have the following information ready:
- Residential history for the past 10 years, including to/from dates (MM/YYYY) and full addresses.
- Employment history for the past 10 years, including to/from dates (MM/YYYY) and employer addresses.
- All legal names used since age 18 (aliases, maiden names, etc.).
- Documentation showing that you’ve met all state-specific requirements (such as proof of pre-licensure education, testing, or surety bonds).
To determine what documents your selected states require, use the tools on the NMLS Resource Center:
- In the License Requirements and Fees Chart, filter by state and look at columns such as Required Documentation, Submission Method, and Fees.
- In the State Licensing Checklist Compiler, select your state and license type to download a PDF checklist tailored to your situation.
Procedure
- Review and organize all required background information before logging into NMLS.
- Download your state-specific checklist and reference the License Requirements and Fees Chart from the NMLS Resource Center.
- Verify you have documentation to support each requirement listed for the license you plan to apply for.
