Passing the SAFE MLO Test

Understand the requirements and structure of the SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) Test, and how to prepare for and schedule your exam.

The SAFE MLO Test is a federally mandated exam that all mortgage loan originators must pass in order to obtain a state license. The test ensures applicants understand federal law, ethics, and standard mortgage practices.

The exam includes a National Component with Uniform State Content. You must pass this exam before applying for licensure in most states.

To prepare for and schedule your exam, review the MLO Education and Testing Guide. This handbook provides information about test enrollment, fees, ID requirements, exam content, study strategies, and rules for retaking the test if needed.

You should not schedule the SAFE MLO Test until you have completed your required pre-licensure education (PE).
