Removing or Revising Associations

Surety companies and surety bond producers can revise or remove existing associations in NMLS when business relationships, execution authority, or authorized states and representatives change.

About this task

An association links a surety company and a surety bond producer, enabling bond creation and execution within NMLS. When changes occur to business relationships, authorized states, bond limits, or representatives, either entity can request a revision or removal of the association. The request is processed through mutual review and acceptance within NMLS.

Tip: While terminology and navigation options differ slightly between surety companies and producers, the actions described here apply to both entities unless otherwise noted.

Procedure

  1. Sign in to NMLS and open the Tasks tab.
  2. Select Company Associations from the submenu, then open the Current Associations view.
This page lists all active associations available to your organization.
  3. Locate the association you want to change and select Manage.
You can view current state authorizations, bond limits, and representative assignments before making changes.
  4. To revise an association, select Request Correction or Update (if available).
    1. Describe the reason for the revision in the provided comment field.
    2. Adjust applicable data:
      Note:
      • Execution authority: Indicate if it should be changed.
      • States: Add, remove, or revise bond limits for specific states.
      • Representatives: Add, remove, or revise bond limits for representatives associated with this relationship.
    3. Select Submit Update to send the correction request to the other entity for review.
Important: Revisions cannot be submitted while an association is pending initial approval. The request must first be accepted or rejected before updates are possible.
  5. To remove an association, select Remove in the Manage Association page.
    1. Enter a required explanation or note describing the reason for removal.
    2. Select Remove Association to confirm.
Note: Once removed, the association status changes to Inactive. The associated entity can no longer issue or manage bonds on behalf of the other party in affected states.
  6. Monitor association status updates.
Note: Both entities receive notifications when revisions or removals are completed or if corrections are requested. Updated association records appear in the Current Associations or Inactive Associations list depending on status.

What to do next

  • Regularly review bond limits and representative lists to ensure all data reflects current authorization levels.
  • Remove associations promptly when business relationships end or when producers no longer act under your authority.
  • For surety companies, verify that state authorizations remain current and consistent with regulatory approvals before updating associations.
Note: The association revision and removal workflow is the same for surety companies and surety bond producers; each action requires acknowledgment and confirmation by the other party before becoming final.
