License Status vs. Renewal Status

Understanding the difference between license status and renewal status in NMLS can help you interpret your Composite View correctly during the renewal process.

In NMLS, your license status and your renewal status are separate fields that reflect different stages of your licensing activity. It is important to understand the distinction between the two to avoid confusion during the renewal period.

License Status indicates the current standing of your license with the state agency. Common license statuses include:

  • Approved: The license is active and in good standing.
  • Terminated: The license has been officially ended by the agency or by the licensee.
  • Revoked, Expired, or Surrendered: The license is no longer valid due to administrative or voluntary action.

Renewal Status reflects whether a renewal request has been submitted and processed during the annual renewal period. Common renewal statuses include:

  • Renewal Requested: The licensee has submitted a renewal request.
  • Approved: The agency has accepted the renewal request and approved continued licensure.
  • Ineligible: The license is blocked from being renewed due to unmet conditions.
  • No Request: No renewal request has been submitted for the current period.

These two statuses may temporarily appear inconsistent. For example, your license may still show as “Approved” while your renewal status shows “No Request” if you have not yet begun the renewal process. Be sure to review both when checking your status in Composite View.
