NMLS Unique Identification Number Specifications

A unique identifier (NMLS Unique ID) is assigned by NMLS to each entity that has a record in the system.

The characteristics of the NMLS Unique ID are as follows

  • A unique ID is assigned to each company (Form MU1), branch (Form MU3), and natural person (Form MU2 or Form MU4) when the entity first creates its record in NMLS
  • Once assigned, an entity’s Unique ID cannot be changed
  • The NMLS Unique ID is assigned sequentially, +1 from the last ID number assigned
  • The first NMLS Unique ID assigned was a four-digit number
  • The NMLS Unique ID is stored as an Oracle INT (numeric integer) and is not expected to exceed one trillion (or 12 digits)
