Every institution, and each of their MLOs, will be required to create an account and submit a filing.
Institutions
- Creating an Account (Entitlement) – (NOTE: No action should be taken at this time. Instructions for entitlement to the NMLS Federal Registry will be made available shortly.) In order to create an account in NMLS, institutions will complete an entitlement request form which NMLS will review. Once confirmed NMLS will assign a unique identification number (also known as an NMLS ID) to the institution and generate a user name and password that gives the institution access to NMLS.
- Submitting a Filing - Filings are formal submissions of information to NMLS. After creating their account, institutions must complete and submit a filing of
Form MU1R.
Individual MLOs
- Creating an Account – Institutions can create individual accounts for their MLOs using the Batch Upload Process (see below). When an individual account is requested, a username and password is automatically sent to the MLO and a unique identification number (NMLS ID) is assigned.
- Submitting a Filing – A filing of
Form MU4R must be completed for each MLO. When the institution uses the Batch Upload Process, it generates the Form MU4R. The institution (or MLO) can then complete the information on Form MU4R. The MLO must then attest to the accuracy of the form. The filing can then be submitted.
Batch Upload
In order to expedite the process of creating accounts and filings, NMLS will accept batch uploads of MLO information. By providing NMLS with basic identifying and contact information for a list of MLOs, an institution can quickly generate a user account and initiate the Form MU4R Filing for each MLO. The batch upload process will also afford the institutions the ability to monitor and control the registration process for individual MLOs. As a best practice, it is recommended that all institutions use this method for the creation of MLO accounts and filings.
